Man how time flies, it seems like it was just a year ago I was telling everyone that this kid Drake had something special to offer to the game. At the end of 2006 I posted a track from him called City Is Mine (before the singing) and said this guy is going to be the future and I remember everyone saying I don’t know Chozen a rapper from Canada? It’s not gonna work, people just couldn’t see this kid from Degrassi being taken seriously in Hip Hop.

I don’t do too many album reviews but since this site was one of the first to cover Drake and became the go to source for everything Drizzy, it’s only right that we take a look at his journey. From before the singing to his first failed attempt a mainstream and then to finally reaching the defining moment that changed everything. I think it’s safe to say that there’s mixed reaction about this album but would you have the same reaction if you had only heard the singles and no leaks and yesterday was the first time you heard the album in it’s entirety? It affects the way you view album when you hear most of the tracks scattered over the web, none the less it doesn’t affect it to a point where it can make a good album suck.

Similar to Lil Wanye most of Drake’s best work isn’t on his album, though the album has some special moments like Over, Light Up and Miss Me and Miss Me especially reminds me of mixtape Drizzy which I think he intentionally went for with that track. That track is good but would have been better with original hook which simply sounded better, Light Up displays how veteran rappers are supposed to collaborate with the new comers in the game, and in classic Jigga fashion he schools Drake to the game and what to expect in the coming years. The album has healthy balance of Rap and R&B tracks and songs like Shut It Down and Find Your Love are two stand out the most to keep females interested and the fellas can appreciate those songs as well.

Listening to the album straight through you can hear some inconsistencies like Show Me A Good Time (should have been replaced with 90 AM In Dallas) which comes off a filler track and features from T.I. and Nicki Minaj were expected to be more epic but instead they fell short. Karaoke and The Resistance are very reminiscent of So Far Gone and are good songs depending on what your looking for from Drake. Then he pulls you back into the album with a song like Unforgettable which features Young Jeezy and apart the Jay-Z feature on Light Up, Jeezy is the most notable feature on the album and made the track a instant after your first listen.

Though the title Thank Me Now is a fitting title for the last track on the album the song is self isn’t special and left the album on a low note.

When it’s all said and done the album fell short of a classic, and more is to be expected from one of the leaders of the new school. He’s still one of my favorite new artists.

I give Thank me Later 3.5 out 5.

As I’ve written before, hip-hop had become only a fraction of 50 Cent’s empire. The epitome of hip-hop hyper masculinity, 50 Cent had morphed from a hungry street emcee into a media personality, a corporate CEO, an actor and a Vitamin Water spokesman, but he was only nominally a rapper, and not surprisingly, his music suffered. Sure, he could still crush any rapper who dared offend him, but he did so with the weight of his media empire, not his rhymes. Perhaps sensing his microphone credibility slipping, 50 has returned to the basics for his new, fatalistically titled album Before I Self Destruct, a work that puts aside previous attempts to pander to radio (oh, hi Amusement Park, I didn’t see you there) and focuses instead on something so simple 50 Cent had seemingly forgotten it; making dope music.

Before I Self Destruct was originally supposed to drop in 2007, but apparently Fiddy wasn’t feeling self destructive enough at the time and instead released Curtis (a.k.a. the album Kanye crushed him on), saying he would hold Self Destruct until the time was right. The time still isn’t quite right – security isn’t tight enough around the G-Unit fortress and the album leaked on the internet several weeks early – but one way or another, Self Destruct has been unleashed upon the world. He won’t want me to put it this way, but this is a comeback album for 50, an album that’s his best since Get Rich or Die Trying, and possibly his best ever.

For most fans Crime Wave was the first “oh s**t, is 50 back?” moment. From the moment the track’s concrete heavy bass line dropped 50’s bad intentions were clear, and more importantly, he did the track’s devastating beat justice, dropping intentionally blunt and blistering lines that are more declarations of war than rhymes: “I’m not telling you to shoot somebody, but if somebody try to shoot you, shoot em.” Not exactly advice you’ll hear at school. Even better is Stretch, a track that not only harkens back to 50’s days as a street level drug dealer but reveals more about the album’s title: “I’m not supposed to be the boss, I’m supposed to be an enforcer.” 50 apparently believes it’s only a matter of time before his violent tendencies overwhelm his CEO responsibilities, and I’m not inclined to disagree. On occasion 50 takes his need to be intimidating a little too far, most notably on Psycho, a track that’s only too appropriate for guest artist Eminem but doesn’t quite work for 50, who’s far too calculating to truly pull off “psycho,” but when he misses on Self Destruct, at least 50 misses while trying to hit the right target.

Where Curtis really fell apart was when 50 turned his attention to the ladies, but on Self Destruct he mercifully avoids any attempts at reviving Candy Shop, and when he does turn his thoughts to women he does so with relative skill. Case in point, Baby Be Me, the album’s lead single and a track that softens 50’s killer persona without turning him soft, giving him a catchy beat by Polow da Don to work over and bringing in the always classy Ne-Yo to polish things off. Every modern hip-hop album that wants to sell big needs at least one track for the ladies, and Baby By Me should get the job done nicely, especially if gold-digging groupies officially adopt it as their anthem. While 50 never gets as sexy-romantic again on Self Destruct, the album does touch on relationships a few more times: on the soulfully regretful Do You Think About Me and the unintentionally hilarious Could’ve Been You, though most of the hilarity predictably comes from R. Kelly’s hook (“cause I be smellin my s**t too, now how you like that?”). In fact, the album’s only flat-out love song is Hold Me Down, and there the object of 50’s affection is his gun. Women weren’t weakening 50’s game, his desire to make radio hits for them was, and thankfully on Self Destruct he desire is mostly dead.

More important that what Self Destruct says about 50 as a public persona, or his place in the rap game, Before I Self Destruct is a hip-hop album that actually seems to care about hip-hop. Hell, the man even does a semi-quasi-cover of the Sugarhill Gang’s seminal Rapper’s Delight with his Gangsta’s Delight. So how long will it be until 50 once again forgets hip-hop in favor of a new clothing line or corporate deal? If history is any judge, not long. But for now, he’s just a damn good street rapper – exactly what we were all waiting for him to become again.

Less than five years ago, Shawty Lo wasn’t even a rapper. Now, he’s the BET’s Rookie of the Year recipient. However prior to releasing his debut album Units in the City, Carlos Walker was facing many different challenges. While facing twenty to forty years of jail time and battling diabetes, Shawty Lo realized there has got to be something else better in life. He began to invest his money into D4L Records, where he would be the CEO. However, shortly after his return from his one year sentence, he began to try his luck at being an official rapper. He recorded his song “I’m the Man” which gained a lot of attention from media and fans all over the nation. And of course, his “beef” with T.I. has helped gain him a lot of exposure as well. Recently, I got a chance to finally sit down with Shawty Lo to talk about what really happened at the Dirty Awards, how the beef with T.I. started, and to see how his life has been since finding out he is a diabetic.

Lexilex: What’s up, Shawty Lo? What’s going on? You’re a busy man to catch up with. I’ve been trying to talk to you since last December. What’s been going on?

Shawty Lo: I’ve just been out here grinding and working hard.

Lexilex: Now, you know I have to ask you. What in the world happened at the Dirty Awards? I thought the conflict had been resolved.

Shawty Lo: It’s really unfortunate that it happened. I regret that it happened. Things just totally got out of hand. I want it to be over cause it’s really nothing to be beefing over. It’s not even worth it.

Lexilex: How did the “beef” with T.I. even start in the first place?

Shawty Lo: It started a while ago around 2006. I had asked him if he wanted to get on a track that I had with me. He told me he would do it. After a minute, I asked his people what was up. They told me he wasn’t doing it. I was like alright, cool. I guess he heard the song “King.” Next thing I know, he releases a song called “Big Shit Popping” where he disses me. “I was king and the niggas started laughing at him, same sucka niggas want the king on the track with them.” Then, I did “Dun Done it All.” After that time, he caught his case, and I fell off with it. At that time, my music was getting a lot of attention so I just let it go. , I never said his name and he never said my name. But when he got out of jail, he went on the radio station saying my name and it went from there. I never mentioned his name on my album once.

Lexilex: Now you’re originally from Atlanta, and Bankhead representative. Do you feel as though T.I. help paved the way for rappers such as yourself that’s from Atlanta and who represent Bankhead as well?

Shawty Lo: I never said that he didn’t put Bankhead on the map because he has. He’s just not from Bankhead.

Lexilex: Let’s talk about D4L for a minute. You guys had major success with your hits “Laffy Taffy” and “Betcha can’t do it like me”. Will we ever hear another record from D4L? Or, is everyone just doing their own thing?

Shawty Lo: You know what I don’t know. People wanted to make it seem like Fabo was the group and he wasn’t the group by himself. He’s supposed to be working on a solo album, now.

Lexilex: Do you feel like songs such as “Laffy Taffy” hurt your street credibility?

Shawty Lo: Nah, I don’t because I wasn’t a rapper then. I was still in prison when I called home and they told me they had a hit. Initially, I was on some CEO type of stuff. I wasn’t trying to be a rapper. They did the record “Betcha Can’t Do It Like Me”. When I first heard it, I was like ‘ya’ll crazy talking about some Laffy Taffy,’ but it was a hit. It wasn’t until 2005 early 2006 when I did the song “I’m the man” and I just kept going from there. The people wanted to hear more music from me. I came home (from prison) that I actually started trying to make something positive out of something negative. I wasn’t trying to go back to the streets.

Lexilex: A few months ago, you won BET’s Rookie of the Year award. How did that make you feel?

Shawty Lo: That made me feel really good that people were acknowledging me for my music and the hard work I’ve put in. It was an honor.

Lexilex: You’re known and seen all around Atlanta. Do you find yourself being bombarded with people asking you to check out their music? Or asking for help with trying to get a deal? What do you do?

Shawty Lo: I just try to keep it real with them. I try to give them pointers on how to be successful. I tell them they have to work hard to get that hit record. You’ve got to have that hit single that people want to hear. You have to get the streets behind you first.

Lexilex: Who are other artists in the game that you respect? Who do you listen to?

Shawty Lo: My number one favorite artist is Jay-Z. My second is Lil’ Wayne.

Lexilex: You’re a known diabetic, which is a prevalent disease in our community. You have participated in the American Diabetes Association walk. Do you ever see yourself doing public service announcements to bring awareness to it?

Shawty Lo: You know, by me really being from the hood I have to take some speech classes because I don’t want to half step with it, I take this seriously. But I am working on my public speaking skills now. I am launching a diabetes health network so that I can help other people struggling with the illness. We are also working on doing a lot more within the community and at homeless shelters. I’ve done huge community days in Bankhead with free haircuts and face paintings for kids. I’ve given away groceries for those who are diabetic. I do a lot but I don’t do it for publicity. A lot of what I do goes unnoticed and that’s fine with me, as long as I’m helping somebody.

Lexilex: What’s next for Shawty Lo? You’re like the new remix king. Is there a new album coming soon?

Shawty Lo: Right now, I’m working on my book and a movie. And both are going to be about my life. It’s going to be called Carlos. I’m going to break it down year by year and let the people know everything. I am in the beginning stages but I hope to have it out by the time the album drops. Right now, the album is scheduled to drop around March 24^th, but that’s not for certain yet. I have a new mix tape out I’m the Man 2K9 with DJ Scream. I have my group Costra Nostra. I have my artists Mook B and Stuntman. I’m just working on a lot of things.

Lexilex: I’ve heard a few new tracks, are those songs from the new mix tape or album?

Shawty Lo: Which ones did you hear?

Lexilex: The one with Trey Songs and Lil’ Wayne.

Shawty Lo: That’s from the album, it’s called “Supplier”.

Lexilex: Will Shawty Lo ever have an official YouTube channel? You seem to have a lot of videos on the internet.

Shawty Lo: You know what? I’ve never really thought about it.

Universal Mind Control is the 8th album from Chicago hip-hop artist Common. Originally scheduled to be released on June 24th 2008 under the name “Invincible Summer,” the release date was pushed back to September 30, 2008 due to Common filming. However, on September 10, 2008, It was announced that the title would be changed to “Universal Mind Control” and the new release date is slated for release on November 11, 2008. Now it’s been scheduled to be released on December 9.

T.I. earns his third straight No. 1 on The Billboard 200 as “Paper Trail” debuts at the top this week. The rapper earns his biggest sales week ever with the Grand Hustle/Atlantic set, which moved 568,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, which is also the third-biggest sales frame of the year.

T.I. crowned the chart with 2006′s “King” and 2007′s “T.I. Vs. T.I.P.” This marks Atlantic’s biggest sales week since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991.

T.I. also has a big week over on the Hot 100, where he breaks the record for largest climb to No. 1 — a feat he already accomplished only six weeks ago. “Live Your Life” featuring Rihanna, the second single from “Paper Trail,” leaps 80-1, replacing the album’s first single “Whatever You Like” at No. 1; the latter leapt to the top 71-1 the week of Sept. 6 and remained there for five weeks total. That makes this T.I. the first artist to replace himself at No. 1 since Usher traded in “Burn” for “Confessions Part II” in July 2004.

14-track Album Solidifies Prolific Producer and Emcee’s Standing As a Pioneer of Hip-Hop’s Future

(September 17, 2008) Brooklyn, NY- 25-year old Black Milk, the accomplished producer, MC, and vanguard of Detroit’s rising hip-hop scene will be releasing his third solo album TRONIC on October 28, 2008 through Fat Beats Records.

Produced entirely by Black Milk and featuring only three guest verses on the entire album (from Pharoahe Monch, Royce Da 5’9″, and Sean Price), TRONIC shows Black Milk flexing his solo production and emcee skills through tracks that are more expressive and daring than his previous works. The album is a departure from the soul-sample driven sounds of 2007′s Popular Demand, as Black employs more live instrumentation, embraces the use of both vintage and modern synthesizers, and explores more orchestral song structure. Without abandoning his trademark Detroit hip-hop sound, he shows growth as an artist while clearly attempting to raise the bar as a pioneer of future hip-hop music. The album also features a short list of diverse players and vocalists including Dwele, rising YouTube star and new Universal Motown signee Colin Munroe, and the legendary DJ Premier who each add their signature creative nuances and textures to Black Milk’s sound.

In only a few short years, Black Milk quickly has become one of underground hip-hop’s foremost ambassadors. Realizing his vast reservoir of talent, both independent and mainstream artists looked to Black to give their albums a raw underground sound. Black has since produced and appeared on tracks for an impressive roster of hip hop artists including Genius/GZA, Busta Rhymes, Pharoahe Monch, Kidz in the Hall, Kardinal Offishall, Guilty Simpson, and Strange Fruit Project, among others. Most recently, Black released two albums, The Set Up with Fat Ray, Black Milk Presents Caltroit with Bishop Lamont. Black also handed nearly all the production on elZhi’s The Preface, an album that is making many critics’ Top 10 lists for 2008 and bringing serious attention to Detroit’s music scene. Black also produces and rhymes as a member of the ground Random Axe with Sean Price and Guilty Simpson and will release a full-length album in early 2009. Young Jeezy claims his second chart-topper on the Billboard 200 as “The Recession” starts at No. 1 this week. The Def Jam set moved 260,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, 92,000 short of the 352,000-unit start for his previous No. 1, 2006′s “The Inspiration.”

The album was scheduled to be released on August 12, 2008 September 2, 2008 and then September 9, 2008 but it was pushed back to September 30, 2008. He is working on the new studio album while under house arrest on pending gun charges. He has completed 50 tracks for the album already. He says that he only likes about 16 of them and plans to produce about 16 more. The album is entitled Paper Trail, which comes from lyrics he has written down on paper. He abandoned this style of rapping after his first album I’m Serious. “He wanted to take more time to really put something down (this time),” explains his rep. According to his MySpace page, Paper Trail is set to be released September 30th, 2008.

The album will feature fourteen tracks as reported by USA Today in 2007 B . Nelly explained the reasoning for the title as “the best way” he can explain “how hard it’s going to hit you.” Due to the amount of delays “Brass Knuckles” has undergone, many fans have begun referring to Nelly as a “huge tease.”

Nelly has a range of featured guests lined up for Brass Knuckles, with appearances from Akon, Ashanti, Avery Storm, Chuck D, Ciara, Fergie, LL Cool J, Nate Dogg, Snoop Dogg, St. Lunatics, T.I. and Usher. Jermaine Dupri also stated possibilities of hopeful collaborations with Bruce Springsteen, Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson. Dupri gave a look into the two collaborations, one being Nelly, Carey and Jackson all appearing on the same track, in which he stated Nelly has laid the following blueprint:

Nelly’s got a crazy collaboration he’s trying to put together, which is him, Janet and Mariah Carey all on one song…That’s what he wants. If he could convince them to do it, it would be crazy. He wants Janet to rap a 16-bar verse, he wants Mariah to sing the hook and he’s gonna do two verses. He has it all planned out. You ask him about it! This is what he wants; he’s 100-percent deadlocked into it.

He went on to speak about the possibility of the Springsteen collaboration and that two of his own tracks will appear on the album,

I think he’s doing a record with Bruce Springsteen. You know he always has to do one of those! My two records [that J.D. has produced for Nelly so far], he’s gonna have some people on them — I won’t tell it yet. I don’t want to jinx the record.

Nelly was unable to get to collaborate with Springsteen as he was too busy around the world, though he if still hopeful to collaborate with him on a future album, or even a repackage of Brass Knuckles.

More production will come from Bryan-Michael Cox, Neff-U and Pharrell Williams, among others.

On March 30, Nelly told HipHopDX.com that “the album would feature a handful of new producers.”

Exit 13 will be the 13th and final album on LL Cool J’s record deal with Def Jam Recordings, a deal that has lasted for more than twenty years. The album was originally titled, Todd Smith Pt. 2: Back To Cool. The album is set to be released September 9, 2008.

Initially, it was said to be executively produced is by fellow Queens rapper 50 Cent, but that remains to be seen. This album will also be the first LL Cool J album since G.O.A.T. to have the parental advisory label for explicit lyrics. LL and DJ Kayslay recently teamed up to release LL’s very first mixtape as a prelude to Exit 13, titled, The Return of the G.O.A.T.

Now I already made it clear that their was no buzz around this T.O.S. album and sure enough the numbers confirm that. Billboards places G-Unit’s T.O.S. album first week sales at 102,000, which would have been great for any other artist but when your 50 Cent someone that basses his whole career on having big numbers this is not a good look.

G-Unit’s sophomore set, “T.O.S. (Terminate on Sight)” (G-Unit/Interscope) debuts at No. 4 with 102,000. The crew’s 2003′s debut album, “Beg For Mercy,” started at No. 1 with 377,000.

I can already see Young Buck, The Game and Fat Joe running to the studio right now to launch some missiles at the Unit’s poor record sales. Me being a G-Unit fan I personally think the album should have been better and 50 Cent should have involved more in the promotional process of the album instead of being promoting a movie that will not be in theaters months from now.

Truth be told the Return Of The Body Snatchers and 50 Cent and Mr. Cee mixtapes were actually more enjoyable than the T.O.S album (still bumping the 50 and Mr. Cee joint). The new G-Unit has become less about the music and more about the drama. If 50 Cent wants to reclaim his thrown as the king of the charts he will have to return to that original G-Unit energy that his fans couldn’t get enough of. Without that I don’t see 50 Cent’s new album selling a million his first week.

I know all you Lil Wayne junkies out there are not going to feel this statement but judging by what I’ve heard so far from this upcoming Nas album The Carter III can’t compete with this album as far as lyrical content and substance is concerned. Check out the track listing.

So now that we are into the second week of Tha Carter 3 sales bonanza, how did Mr. Carter hold up? Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter 3 has sold 309k in its second week, for a combined total of 1.3 million albums sold to date. That’s about a 66% drop off from the first week, so it is likely the album can huff and puff its way to 2 million in a few months. What does this say about the state of the music industry? It’s still in the shitter.

If this was 2003 and Wayne had the same buzz he had leading into this album, he would have probably sold 2 or 3 million in a week. Unfortunately, the album was leaked two weeks before its release date and is not the classic album many predicted Lil Wayne would drop. We do hear he has wrapped up the video for Got Money featuring T-Pain, so that may bring a few more sales in, but who are we kidding?

“The industry scorned him because he’s a rapper’s rapper,” XL added. “He doesn’t sit through marketing meetings and know the politics of radio — or even the little backlash coming. When Banks came out, he had to fight a lot of hate. It wasn’t based on music no more; it was the politics.”

Sha is predicting big things for the album Banks is currently cooking up. “The album he’s working on is amazing and he’s coming back like Jay-Z after ‘Sunshine,’” he said. “[Sometimes] you get that one album that don’t connect, but Banks’ fans is still with him. He’s still touring and doing shows like sh– is all the way right. He’s coming to beat their heads in — he on some lyrical exercise.

P.S. Lloyd Banks last album was not a bad album it just didn’t sell, he’s not only the best rapper in G – Unit he’s one of the best in New York. I know going from 3 million sold to 3 hundred thousand sold on his second album is not a good look but I still think Banks well stay in the game judging by what I’ve heard lately.

T-Pain Interview

Although Mistah F.A.B. has endured much scrutiny in the national press over the past few months for his single, “Ghost Ride It”, he prepares himself for his upcoming release on SMC Recordings this May with DA BAYDESTRIAN.

Born and raised in Oakland, CA, FAB encountered his first taste of fame when he entered The Source Magazine’s “Unsigned Hype Freestyle Battle” in 1999 and placed 3rd. This brought him to the attention of a local

Bay Area based label – Straight Hits, who signed him in 2001. FAB released his first underground album with the label in 2003 entitled, “Nig-Latin”.

Bay Area legend, Mac Dre took notice of this fledgling rapper and enlisted him as one of the original members of the Thizz Nation. With the backing of this renowned rapper Mistah F.A.B. released “Mac Dre Presents Mistah F.A.B. – Son of a Pimp” in 2005 featuring the huge regional hit – “Super Sic Wit It” featuring E-40. The single ends up taking the Hyphy movement in a whole different direction, with the song lyric – “I do the dummy, retarded, and ride the yellow bus”. The Hyphy movement revolves around acting a fool and FAB took it one step further with these lyrics.

The song and the album propelled FAB to regional stardom. Soon every artist in the bay area started calling, wanting him to guest star on their albums. He was also featured on the MTV special, “My Block – The Bay” which caught the interest of many major labels – FAB decided to roll with Atlantic Records.

It is not unusual these days for an artist to be signed to two labels at once. After negotiating with Atlantic, the Bay Area giant, SMC Recordings was able to secure a deal with FAB as well. Will Bronson, Co-Founder of SMC speaks on his longstanding business relationship with FAB, “FAB and my history is crazy, we pretty much came up together. To be involved in this album and everything FAB’s got going on- as corny as it sounds- is beyond business, this shit is personal, but that’s the way independent music should be.”

Recording his album – DA BAYDESTRIAN in record time, the release will also feature FAB’s infamous DVD, “The Freestyle King” as a bonus as well as a “Yellow Bus Pass” to download “Son of a Pimp” for free. FAB explains why he decided to add extra features to his album, “”I’m puttin the Bonus DVD and free download of ‘Son Of A Pimp’ in there because that’s the album that got my buzz crazy in the Bay. We’re sayin’ “Da Baydestrian” is the prequel to “Da Yellow Bus Rydah” so I wanna give you as much of me to get you ready for that.”

DA BAYDESTRIAN will feature production by Rob-E, Sean-T, Traxxamillion, Young L among others and guest appearances from Too Short, Keak Da Sneak, Fabo from D4L, Mesy Marv and Spice 1. FAB’s next track off the album, “Get This Shit Together” has already been leaked on line and has been popping up on West coast radio stations. FAB wants everyone to know, “‘ Da Baydestrian‘ is for all the fans that’s been waiting for the last two years for something new. It’s a project that’s gonna rep the Bay to the fullest no strings attached and show everyone there’s more to me than just goin’ dumb. People forget that I really spit and think that all I do is ride Da Yellow Bus”.

Never one to slow down, F.A.B. is already back in the studio working on his next album, “Da Yellow Bus Rydah” being released on Atlantic Records, “I know everyone is like what’s up with the whole Atlantic deal? Yes, Atlantic is goin’ to drop “Da Yellow Bus Rydah”, DA BAYDESTRIAN is just the in between process. The music business is crazy.
