“Kidd Kidd, my face on every wanted poster” — you might not have recognized the voice, but Kidd was on one of the biggest singles of 2008: Lil Wayne’s “Mrs. Officer.” The downtown New Orleans native linked up with the uptown N.O. legend (Kidd says downtown cats are known for being grimy, while uptown fellas are famous for stuntin’) more than six years ago as part of Wayne’s side clique Sqad Up. The collective — which also included Gudda Gudda and T-Streets, who are now down with Wayne’s Young Money label — released a slew of mixtapes and underground, independent albums on Wayne’s now-defunct Money Yung’N Records.
“Wayne, he works hard,” said Kidd, who is known primarily by the nicknames “Peanut” or “Nutt” in his hometown. “You’ve got to give it up to him. He’s a hard worker, so I feel like if I’m around you, I have to work just as hard as you. When he’s in the studio, I’m in there. I have to make sure I’m on top of mine too. It was just about being at the right place at the right time.”
Since last year, Kidd has ventured out to do his own thing and has linked up with music-industry vet Sha Money XL, who played an integral part in 50 Cent and the G-Unit’s rise to fame.
“I want to see the best for him,” XL told Mixtape Daily. “I got the label deal too. We’re gonna put out records regardless, but it’s more for me to get him out there as big as he can be, ’cause he’s a star. I want to see him rise to the top. If another major comes in and got the right money, we can do it. L.A. Reid, all y’all know we get to it. We can get to it.”
Kidd’s first stop to making sure everyone knows his face and his music is the mixtape New Kidd on the Block, hosted by DJ Whoo Kid and DJ Scream. The CD has a mixture of freestyles and new songs, as well as old records he recorded with Drake and Wayne. “I wanted to put those songs out there, because somebody else was already trying to,” Kidd explained. “It wasn’t out there how it was supposed to be, so we put those on there.”
Some of the records Kidd dug in the crates for was “My N—a,” which lent some melodic inspiration to Drake’s “Best I Ever Had’ and the original version of “Forever” — sans Eminem and Kanye West (Drake and Wayne’s verses are totally different form the version you hear on the radio).
“What a lot of people don’t know, ['Forever'], it was a me, Drake and Wayne song, the original before they did the remix to it.”
He also flipped his own version of Drake’s “Fear,” which is about Kidd’s introduction to the rap game. “It’s letting people know, ‘Don’t be scared of me. Just give me your ear and let me do me,’ ” Kidd explained.

Gucci Mane Has Been Sentenced To A Year In Jail (Yes Again!)

Gucci Mane was sentenced to 12 months in prison on Thursday (November 12) for probation violation and taken away to prison in handcuffs, according to a rep from his label. The sentence is a blow to Gucci’s career. The ATL rapper has a album coming out — The State Vs. Radrick Davis — on December 8 and is arguably at the height of his career; in terms of his sentence, he may be out of prison in six months.

50 Cent – Before I Self Destruct Album Review

As I’ve written before, hip-hop had become only a fraction of 50 Cent’s empire. The epitome of hip-hop hyper masculinity, 50 Cent had morphed from a hungry street emcee into a media personality, a corporate CEO, an actor and a Vitamin Water spokesman, but he was only nominally a rapper, and not surprisingly, his music suffered. Sure, he could still crush any rapper who dared offend him, but he did so with the weight of his media empire, not his rhymes. Perhaps sensing his microphone credibility slipping, 50 has returned to the basics for his new, fatalistically titled album Before I Self Destruct, a work that puts aside previous attempts to pander to radio (oh, hi Amusement Park, I didn’t see you there) and focuses instead on something so simple 50 Cent had seemingly forgotten it; making dope music.
Before I Self Destruct was originally supposed to drop in 2007, but apparently Fiddy wasn’t feeling self destructive enough at the time and instead released Curtis (a.k.a. the album Kanye crushed him on), saying he would hold Self Destruct until the time was right. The time still isn’t quite right – security isn’t tight enough around the G-Unit fortress and the album leaked on the internet several weeks early – but one way or another, Self Destruct has been unleashed upon the world. He won’t want me to put it this way, but this is a comeback album for 50, an album that’s his best since Get Rich or Die Trying, and possibly his best ever.
For most fans Crime Wave was the first “oh s**t, is 50 back?” moment. From the moment the track’s concrete heavy bass line dropped 50’s bad intentions were clear, and more importantly, he did the track’s devastating beat justice, dropping intentionally blunt and blistering lines that are more declarations of war than rhymes: “I’m not telling you to shoot somebody, but if somebody try to shoot you, shoot em.” Not exactly advice you’ll hear at school. Even better is Stretch, a track that not only harkens back to 50’s days as a street level drug dealer but reveals more about the album’s title: “I’m not supposed to be the boss, I’m supposed to be an enforcer.” 50 apparently believes it’s only a matter of time before his violent tendencies overwhelm his CEO responsibilities, and I’m not inclined to disagree. On occasion 50 takes his need to be intimidating a little too far, most notably on Psycho, a track that’s only too appropriate for guest artist Eminem but doesn’t quite work for 50, who’s far too calculating to truly pull off “psycho,” but when he misses on Self Destruct, at least 50 misses while trying to hit the right target.
Where Curtis really fell apart was when 50 turned his attention to the ladies, but on Self Destruct he mercifully avoids any attempts at reviving Candy Shop, and when he does turn his thoughts to women he does so with relative skill. Case in point, Baby Be Me, the album’s lead single and a track that softens 50’s killer persona without turning him soft, giving him a catchy beat by Polow da Don to work over and bringing in the always classy Ne-Yo to polish things off. Every modern hip-hop album that wants to sell big needs at least one track for the ladies, and Baby By Me should get the job done nicely, especially if gold-digging groupies officially adopt it as their anthem. While 50 never gets as sexy-romantic again on Self Destruct, the album does touch on relationships a few more times: on the soulfully regretful Do You Think About Me and the unintentionally hilarious Could’ve Been You, though most of the hilarity predictably comes from R. Kelly’s hook (“cause I be smellin my s**t too, now how you like that?”). In fact, the album’s only flat-out love song is Hold Me Down, and there the object of 50’s affection is his gun. Women weren’t weakening 50’s game, his desire to make radio hits for them was, and thankfully on Self Destruct he desire is mostly dead.
More important that what Self Destruct says about 50 as a public persona, or his place in the rap game, Before I Self Destruct is a hip-hop album that actually seems to care about hip-hop. Hell, the man even does a semi-quasi-cover of the Sugarhill Gang’s seminal Rapper’s Delight with his Gangsta’s Delight. So how long will it be until 50 once again forgets hip-hop in favor of a new clothing line or corporate deal? If history is any judge, not long. But for now, he’s just a damn good street rapper – exactly what we were all waiting for him to become again.

“It’s nothing you can do about those comparisons… I know it comes from a place where people don’t really know. It’s one of those things where they think “this guy reminds me of XYZ” because that’s the hot guy that’s on their mind right now. I remember a couple of years ago, people was saying Lupe cuz that’s who they was hearing about.
Once people get into the music, it’s like “oh wait, no he’s not.” But like I always say, he’s talented so it’s not a diss really. It’s all good. But the Toronto joint was crazy, ha. She said it, I was like . She didn’t mean anything by it. [Interviewer: It's kinda funny how the blogs ran with it.] Yeah, it was a real expression… I can’t believe they caught that on-camera.”

Clipse Speak On Ex-Manager Anthony “Geezy” Gonzalez

“If the good die young, then the greats go to jail,” Pusha T raps on the Clipse’s new single, “Doorman.”
The duo have been reflecting on the incarceration of their manager and friend, Anthony “Geezy” Gonzalez. Last month, Geezy struck a plea deal for one federal drug conspiracy charge as well as one firearm charge. As much as it hurts to not have their friend with them, the Clipse said they have to go on with their lives and careers.
“The show don’t stop, we know what we gotta do,” Malice, who tweeted, “We luv u GZ!” in the wake of Geezy’s court outcome, said. “So we’re out here doing it. The situation has been hard as well as heartbreaking. But I got the faith everything is gonna work out for the best. I believe everything happens for a reason. We still take care of our fam. We never leave our fam behind.”
The Clipse release their next LP, Till the Casket Drops, on December 8. Guests include Yo Gotti — not Drake — on “Showin’ Out.” Fabolous also appears on a remix of “Kinda Like a Big Deal.” (Kanye West appeared on the original.)
“Geezy’s good,” Pusha insisted. “Yeah, he’s alright,” Malice concurred.
“Everybody is good. It’s Geezy, it’s a few more too,” Pusha detailed. “Y’all just know Geezy, but everybody is our brother. Every time we talk to them, nobody is hanging their head. Ain’t no crybabies. We got real soldiers in the family. Everything is gonna work out alright.”
According to The Virginian-Pilot, Geezy is scheduled to be sentenced on January 11.

“When I first heard the song, I was in Paris,” Rihanna said earlier this week of the track, which was written by The-Dream and produced by Tricky Stewart. “Dream and Tricky, they flew out and played me the record. They played me a few [songs], but this one stuck out to me. It had such an arrogance to it, which is so far from who I am … which is part of why I wanted to do it. It was fun. It was bragging. A lot of attitude. Young Jeezy was the perfect person for the topic of the song. Just the vibe of the song. I love, love, love his verse. He added so much more to the record.”

Lil Boosie Gets Four Years For Violating House Arrest

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) – Baton Rouge rapper Torrence Hatch, better known as Lil Boosie, was back in court Monday after violating his probation.
District Court Judge Chip Moore revoked Hatch’s probation, sending him straight to jail.
Hatch was on house arrest with an ankle monitor. The monitor indicated that on more than one occasion, Hatch had violated the terms of his release.
Judge Moore doubled Hatch’s original sentence and ordered him to spend four years in prison.
Hatch was convicted of drug and gun charges in September.

Shot to the heart. Young Dro was putting the finishing touches on his album P.O.L.O. (Players Only Live Once) when he walked into the Grand Hustle office and found out the entire LP was already on the Internet.
“When I walked in the office, couldn’t nobody look me in the eye,” Dro said. “They was looking down. You had Jim Jonsin beats, some of the best production I ever had on there. When I saw it I was like, ‘Oh my God. OMG.’ But then I said, ‘I’m gonna patch it up.’ ”
Dro shook off the shock and came to accept the fact that he would have to record more songs.
“The album got leaked, so we going back in the studio,” he explained. “We gonna get Cannon beats, we gonna get DJ Toomp beats, we gonna sew the album up and act like it ain’t never bled. No leak.”
P.O.L.O. is now slated to drop sometime in January 2010.
“If you a real player, you only get one life,” Dro said. “I’m still a player and I still got one life to live. I’m still in that Polo.”
In the meantime, Dro says he’s thinking about putting out five mixtapes — the first is R.I.P.: (I Killed That Shit) with DJ Don Cannon.
“I been waiting for years — he finally called me and said, ‘I wanna do the tape with you,’ ” Cannon said. “I was like, ‘Yes.’ We got new beats, a bunch of freestyles where he killed [other artists'] beats. The whole thing is, ‘I killed that.’ Some people are gonna get mad he killed their beat.”
“I kill everything I do,” Dro insisted. “If you see me in some clothes, I killed that. If you see me in my whip, I killed that. If you hear my flows, I killed that. I be killing stuff. Then we putting rests in peace to — everybody talking swag this, swag that — I killed that. I’m the #1 guy, I’m gonna kill it. R.I.P.”

50 Cent Speaks On Possibly Bringing Beanie Sigel To G-Unit

Not so fast. After Beanie Sigel and 50 Cent sat down for a joint interview with Philadelphia radio station Power 99 earlier this week, the streets thought Sigs signing with G-Unit was already a done deal. According to 50, they did talk about it, but still have a long way to go.
“I had a meeting with him today,” 50 said Thursday. “First we gotta start with the music — where’s the music? Then we have to get into what it would take to bring him over to G-Unit as a record company. You can’t sign a deal in a conversation — it’s a process. We’ll see what happens.”
Fif did note that he thinks Beanie is capable lyrically and looks forward to hearing what he has in his vaults. “I would listen to what he has,” Fif explained. “His skills haven’t diminished. Nine times out of 10, he’ll have something workable already on deck. When you’re dealing with artists who have been established longer than you, it’s a process. You have to figure out exactly where they are at before you commit to being a part of those projects, because they have habits and they’ve been conditioned for something different. You have to figure out exactly what that is before you dive in.”
The Broad Street Bully isn’t the only established MC Fif is thinking about extending an invitation to. “I got artists who I’m looking at,” he said. “A few of them aren’t actively available for me to do different things with them. But I’m looking to sign new artists into the actual company.”

“You have to be close with your foundation and the people who know you best because they’ve known you for so long that they can see the changes in you,’ he continues. “Fame is such a deadly drug that you can’t see the changes because you are so consumed by it. You need a close-knit group of friends and family to make sure you stay grounded.”
