Jay-Z

“I hear it all the time — ‘Yo, he should let the young guys, the new generation of guys come in.’ But you don’t become the front-runner in music because someone lets you. You have to claim your shoes,” Jay-Z says. “If you grow up listening to hip-hop, you love hip-hop and that’s the end of it. But if you’re a 30-year-old rapper still trying to make music like you’re 15, then you’re making it narrow. At my age, I can’t relate to a 15-year-old. I deal with mature and relevant topics for my age group — it has to all be based on true emotions. The more diversity and the more mature we make hip-hop, the bigger the net you cast.”

Agreed, it’s not Jay-Z’s fault that most of the new rappers suck. It’s because most of them don’t know what they want to be because they have an identity crisis, on one side you have some who are trying to be someone else and then on the other side you have those who try to be different and just end up looking corny. The only thing they’re not doing is being themselves.

  1. What it comes down to is that rappers nowadays are trying too hard to stay relevant and in the publics ear, rappers are trying to find their identity in the game, but the rap game itself has lost its identity, so much that we dont even know whats good or whats real anymore. On the bright-side this year has been to hip-hop and i can see a revival comin.

  3. i completely understand what Jay is saying, im only 16 but i can see how hiphop has changed for the better and not so good. the new generation is definitely making a difference and i like it (sorry if you dont agree) i love asher roth, kid cudi, big sean, drake, mickey factz, b.o.b., wale, the cool kids, u-n-i, tiron, and CH. thats just me but i love the old school too i cant get enought of Wu tang, Tribe Quest, slick rick, and BIG. and he’s right when he says he cant relate to a 15 yr old b/c we’re living different lives and going through different experiences. but that doesnt mean i cant like what he has to say. (i actually like jay more then most ppl i know the words to most of his songs and everything)he’s right if you love hiphop thats it no questions asked but at the same time hiphop needs to grow up and improve itself b/c there rappers who are truley doing hiphop an injustice.
