J. Cole talks to Nick Huff of Hard Knock TV about his thoughts on the Jay-Z & Beanie Sigel situation, being compared to Drake on MuchMusic TV in Toronto, and what impact mixtapes have in an artists career.
“It’s nothing you can do about those comparisons… I know it comes from a place where people don’t really know. It’s one of those things where they think “this guy reminds me of XYZ” because that’s the hot guy that’s on their mind right now. I remember a couple of years ago, people was saying Lupe cuz that’s who they was hearing about.
Once people get into the music, it’s like “oh wait, no he’s not.” But like I always say, he’s talented so it’s not a diss really. It’s all good. But the Toronto joint was crazy, ha. She said it, I was like . She didn’t mean anything by it. [Interviewer: It's kinda funny how the blogs ran with it.] Yeah, it was a real expression… I can’t believe they caught that on-camera.”

[7:10-7:40] Beans was the better artist out of the actual crew, the stronger artist. That’s why when he did the year and a day, I was like “as soon as he comes home, I’m bringing that project over here.” He would of got at least $800,000. Jay was telling him he didn’t want to lose him.
Jay & Puffy had these feelings towards me at one point. They didn’t want to lose anything to me… It was like “I’m losing something, to him?”
[8:35-9:10] I think that he does a great job at manipulating the system. When he had the Def Jam building, Nas got like $2 million dollars. Jay got a $15 million dollar marketing plan. He was like “This is for you. This is for me. This is for you. 1, 2, this is for me. This is for you. 1, 2, 3, this is for me.” Until his whole marketing plan is the real one. You know that “Wave, wave, wave.” [Show What Me What You Got] That was the wrong record. If you got $15 million in marketing, you can make the wrong record feel like right record.

Do you guys even know anything about the secret society? Shit is crazy you better look it up, I’ve heard things about Jay-Z being affiliated with it but nothing solid. 50 Cent impressed me with the “Glasses, None Confrontational Vibe” thing, I didn’t expect him to pick that up that’s the type of things you learn in psychology, that boy must be reading some books because he wasnt’t this sharp coming in.

Young Jeezy & Jay-Z To Shoot “As Real As It Gets” Video

Young Jeezy made another onstage connection with Young Hov on Saturday night, when the Snowman brought out Jay-Z during the BET Hip-Hop Awards. The following night, Young told MTV News that their performance of “As Real as It Gets” was the setup for an even bigger event, the song’s video.
“Opened up the BET Awards, me and Jay-Z,” Jeezy said on set of Triple C’s and Rick Ross’ new video for “Erryday.” “Shouts out to the homie, man, he stopped through. He was on his way to another show. But that’s what we do. Real ones do real things. I just wanted to do something big for the city. Since the song is on both of our albums, we gonna shoot the video. It’s gonna be crazy. We said, ‘Let’s go ahead and break it in at the BET Awards.’ ”
Jeezy explained that the video is going to display some of their riches. “We just gonna go dumb,” he said. “Call Rick [Ross] up, everybody. [We'll have] cars, watches, blunts, money, just go dumb. Dumm-meeee! That’s what we need to do.”
Jeezy also said he wouldn’t mind doing some more shows with Jay-Z. “I’mma keep it all the way live, homie. At this point in my career, I’m like, whatever, I do this from the heart,” Mr. 17.5 said. “Everything I do is real to me. If it’s some strings and orchestra with it, and we still talking about what we supposed to be talking about, I’m all for it.”

Jay-Z, Drake, Ice Cube Big Winners At BET Hip-Hop Awards

At the Atlanta Civic Center, Young Jeezy — who often has high-profile guests to join him onstage — pulled off a huge move during the BET Hip-Hop Awards, kicking off the show by bringing out surprise guest Jay-Z. Hov and Young opened the show with “As Real As It Gets,” with the two hip-hop heavyweights going back and forth on verses. With the audience on their feet by song’s end, Jeezy said, “Welcome to Atlanta.”
Jay later took home the MVP of the Year award, beating out such popular peers as Lil Wayne and Drake. Hov dedicated his win to Mr. Magic, Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube. “Brooklyn, we did it again,” he said at the conclusion of his brief speech.
Other big winners announced during the show were Drake for Rookie of the Year and DJ AM for DJ of the Year.
Busta Rhymes stood in for the turntable great, who passed away in August. “I’m honored to accept this,” he said. Rhymes also saluted his recently deceased personal DJ, Roc Raida, and pioneer Mr. Magic who formatted his New York radio show with 100 percent hip-hop in the 1980s.
DJ Drama was the house DJ, with DJ Khaled serving as the show’s MC. Mike Epps, the show’s host, did a short stand-up routine as he cracked the mic, clowning on everyone from Lil Mama to Snoop Dogg.
During breaks, BET showed videotaped packages of their now-famous “cypher” rap sessions. DJ Premier played a beat while three sets of MCs rapped. The first set included KRS-One and Wale, while the second set showcased Joe Budden and Nicki Minaj. The rhyme of the night went to Eminem, however — his session included Black Thought and Mos Def. Em hit a rapid-fire flow that addressed everything from sex to Barack Obama.

Like I said I pretty much saw this coming, Eminem should have definitely been on the list especially since he won by a land slide on the fan poles, the fight is fixed I’m not too ecstatic about this list at all. #5 Eminem, #4 Kanye West, #3 Lil Wayne, #2 Drake, #1 Jay-Z would have been the perfect list for me and yes I put Drake over Lil Wayne if we’re talking about this year and hottest currently in the game Drake made the biggest impact and doesn’t even have an album, Lil Wayne had a couple misses this year with that whole rock thing.

(26:55) Flex: So 50 on a new freestyle.. On the new album though, you kinda… [Jay interrupts: That was a compliment.] What made you bring up the Summer Jam stage?
I was really going through the history of it. It’s part of the history… I was actually giving him props. Every single person in that song, I was giving them their time… [Flex: He has a freestyle.] Nah, I think that was already done. No way in the world he could have.. He had that in the tuck. [Flex: You guys aren't moving together with this are you?] Nawwww. You know, he’s a loose cannon. Any given day you could wake up and he’ll start shooting.
(29:00) Flex: T-Pain… Have you had a chance to talk to him? [Jay: Naw.] Were you surprised?
Yeah I was a little surprised because in all my interviews, I’m sure they’re online. They got kids that do that in 30secs. You can find 8-10 interviews of me saying “I’m not talking about T-Pain, he’s a talented guy.” SEVERAL times. So I don’t buy his explanation. [Flex: Is it timed perfectly, around the week of the album?] I guess so cuz I don’t buy that, there’s no way in the world he didn’t hear that. [Flex: Laughs. Were you aware he was there when he came out on the Summer Jam stage?] I didn’t know he was coming out, for one. I had no idea that was him. The first time I looked I didn’t know who it was. I really didn’t. I’m not being funny, I promise you. [Flex: I think people got in his ear after that.] Yeah. That’s what I believe happened. [Flex: So you haven't had a chance to...] What’s there to talk about. It’s not like a real beef. That’s another thing. There’s too much talking. “We squashing a fake beef?” Like we have a real problem. Then we shouldn’t be talking on the radio at all. There’s no real problem so what is there to squash. [Flex: Do you get tired of it?] I know the people get tired of it. They have to. The people just want to hear great music. If it was few, far and between, then it would be exciting. Now it’s like, “ight man, just put out some music.”
(23:50) Flex: Sometimes I look online, and I see Freeway, Peedi Crakk, and other Roc-A-Fella artists saying “Oh, Hov didn’t call me” or “Hov didn’t tell me he wasn’t doing the Roc anymore..” How do you feel when you see those things online?
It’s difficult because I’ve done so much for them… I gave everybody a shot. Everybody got a chance to sit at the table and make something. So whether you parlayed that into something or let that go away. You know, that’s pretty much on you. So if I’m not doing anything tomorrow or the next day, you should be cool with that. [Flex: Do they reach out sometimes?] Yeah, yeah. I still speak to Freeway and Chris. More than anybody else. Chris first, then Freeway. Shoutout to Freeway, he was sick the other day.
(41:30) Flex: Roc Nation, what’s the next thing we’ll see on the label?
The next two artists we’re grooming, who you’ll probably see first are, J. Cole and a girl by the name of Rita Ora. Who’s from London and incredibily talented.
