Eminem, what advice do you offer, if any, on being scrutinized for being a white rapper. Do you guys ever talk about race in that way?
Eminem: We make jokes about it, but I don’t think we talk about it in depth. As I was listening to his music, I am not even thinking about any of that shit. It’s just the music. That’s one of the things that’s great about it. I’m not even thinking about it when I hear the music.
Yelawolf: We do poke fun of it because it’s funny. Like, he calls me White Dog.

Oh, you called him that on the BET Awards Cypher. I didn’t realize it was an ongoing joke?
EM: Yeah, or Beige Sheep. [Laughs]
YW: Cracker Nuts. Whatever, I think it’s kinda unspoken.
EM: We deal with it enough as it is. So now, let’s make music.

Personally I really only fux with 3 cats on this list, I’ve been saying Meek Mill was going to be something ever since 2005 when I first saw him on YouTube back when those street DVDs were all over the place, fast forward 5 years later he’s now the biggest new cat to come out of Philly and just signed a record deal with Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group. Fred The Godson is fresh and it’s been a while since I’ve heard well put together punchlines and metaphors from a new rapper not since early Banks and Loso. Yelowolf stood out to me from the first time I heard him spit and is really the first white rapper since Eminem that I count as lyrical which is why him signing with Shady records makes so much sense. I can’t wait to hear collaborations with him and Eminem as well as Slaughterhouse.

Mac Miller and Diggy Simmons stand out as well but they’re not necessarily my cut tea, so I’m not really checking for them.

Just like 2010 it’s gonna be a good year for Hip Hop again, thoughts on this years picks?

I just picked up a lot of classic-rock, melodic influence from my mom, music that she listened to, like 10,000 Maniacs, Led Zeppelin, REO Speedwagon and Yes. She was actually dating a dude who was on tour with Aerosmith during the ‘Walk This Way’ tour who brought me back some of my Adidas T-shirts and [a tape of] ‘Paul Revere.’ Beastie Boys, that was my first taste of hip-hop. I equally love both, classic rock and hip-hop. I love all music, really, and I really use classic rock a lot. I’m heavily influenced by that melodically in my music. I can’t really separate the two. Where I’m from is like ‘Hustle & Flow’ versus ‘8 Mile.’ It’s that really grimy, box-Chevy, dope-boy, working-class music.
